Established in 1979 to fulfill the demand of Doaba region for quality education, the department of Punjabi since then is catering to the linguistic and literary needs of people of this region and providing trained teachers to the local colleges. It is a matter of great pride and honor that most of teachers working in local colleges are the product of this department. Being a university department, it has always been a center of preference for local students to pursue their higher studies in language, literature and culture due to different, innovative and student friendly curriculum activities. Now with the introduction of credit based continuous evaluation grading system, the department has again emerged as center of reference for local graduates to get post graduate degree from this department. The department students are offered 37 courses (25 core courses, 8 elective courses and 4 ID courses) and are continuously evaluated during the semester. The main objective of this department is to impart quality education and research in the field of Punjabi language, literature and culture. Apart from providing instructions in MA (Hons.) Punjabi and M.Phil courses, the department is also offering research guidance in above said areas.
Faculty: 4 (1 Professor and 3 part time Asst. Professors). The faculty is engaged in research activities related to the field of Punjabi language and linguistics, literature and culture. The faculty members have published 6 books, 5 chapters and 3 articles in reputed journals during last 5 years. During this period, more than 18 students have completed their Ph.D. thesis and about 52 students have obtained their M.Phil. from this department. The library is well equipped with more than 9,266 books and journals on Punjabi language, literature and culture. The department has sufficient infrastructure like audio visual systems, computers, TV sets, OHP, LCD projectors to cater the immediate demands of students and faculty
